The Day Patterns in the Old Testament

These patterns extend through the New Testament as well – like a watermark.

FIRST DAY REFERENCES (excluding dates and day sequences)

The first day references in the Old Testament do not necessarily align with actual days. For example, at the time of Christ Passover lambs were killed between mid-day and night-time on what is called the evening of the 14th Nisan. Deuteronomy 16:4 assigns that evening to the first day of the feast of unleavened bread which is 15th Nisan. So we probably need to think of the first day of the feast as beginning at mid-day on 14th and ending at sunset on 15th.

“First day” references include “one day” references which are the same expression in the original Hebrew.

First day references tell a story. The narrative goes like this:

The first day will be a day of killing of a sacrificial offering. The killing will be characterized by the “light of the world” being overtaken by darkness. Specifically it will be a day on which Passover lambs are sacrificed, a feast of unleavened bread eaten and a full Sabbath day observed. Death will follow a hanging , on a hill before the Lord. The victim would be a king and at least partly Jewish. This day there would be a form of darkness over the land but the light would return during evening. A work of great significance would be accomplished by a male child born in Zion resulting in the generation of a new gentile realm and the work of the day would remove iniquity of the land.

Genesis 1:3-5

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

In another first day reference Isaiah points to a future intervention by God of great significance to the whole earth. It begins with the birth of a male child and leads to a new gentile realm derived from Zion.

(Isaiah 66:7-8)

Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child. Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

(Zechariah 3:9)

I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

THREE DAYS REFERENCES (excluding dates and day sequences)

The “three days” texts tell a story. The narrative goes like this. A man came with friends to Jerusalem seeking the welfare of the children of Israel, and abode there three days. At some point the ruler hung him on a tree to die, In his death he had nothing to eat or drink for three days and three nights during which time he was hidden away, imprisoned in thick darkness but he arose in the night, and was allowed to live. However during the three days of his death he went on a spiritual journey recovering lost spirits (the spoil) and celebrating with them. (Consistent with 1 Peter 3:18-20, 4:6) At the end of the three days he presented himself before the king. There are numerous texts (eg. 1 Corinthians 15:23, John 20:17, Matthew 28:9) that collectively show that Jesus was required to appear before God (the king) during the wave offering on the morrow after the Sabbath of the Passover. This occurred approximately 9 am on resurrection day and so was within the three days of the pattern.
